Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome!

Welcome!

The Montana Army National Guard (MTARNG) currently has ongoing unexploded ordnance (UXO) projects at two sites: The Limestone Hills Training Area near Townsend and the North Helena Valley.

Limestone Hills Training Area Project

The LHTA project site is located west of Townsend, Montana (see map below). UXO clearance is being conducted on approximately 277 acres of land immediately adjacent to an active limestone quarry and lime plant owned by Graymont Western U.S. Inc. (Graymont).

North Helena Valley Project

The North Helena Valley project site occupies approximately 50 square miles about 7 miles north of downtown Helena, in Lewis and Clark County, Montana (see figure below). MEC contamination has been documented in a portion of this area, as shown in Figure 1-2. The project site is defined as an area exhibiting the highest probability that MEC items will be encountered and occupies several square miles. It is approximately bounded by portions of the Chevallier Ranch to the north, Applegate Drive to the east, Lincoln Road to the south, and Buffalohorn Drive to the West.
